Tasting Notes
Nose – Candied almonds and brown sugar with a hint of citrus.
Palate – Vanilla, brown butter, and toasted pecans.
Finish – Dry and astringent with allspice and oak.
Food Pairing – Pecan Pie
Pecan pie is a great match for this pour. The rich, nutty sweetness pulls forward the toasted pecan and brown sugar notes on the palate, while the buttery crust helps soften the dry, oaky, and slightly astringent finish. The warm baking spices in the pie also play nicely with the allspice on the back end, making this a really comfortable, well-matched pairing.
Nav and Katie’s Thoughts
This one was a little tough for me, mostly because Eagle Rare 10 Year is one of my go-to everyday pours. When I heard Buffalo Trace was releasing a 12 year, I was cautiously optimistic. Tasting this with Katie, we were both surprised by how noticeable those extra two years were. We enjoyed the pour, but it didn’t quite pull us back for another sip the way we expected, and the slightly astringent finish played a role in that. Overall, it’s still a solid pour—just a different experience than what we’re used to with Eagle Rare.
