Food Pairing – Dark Chocolate Bread Pudding
When Katie and I were figuring out a pairing for this one, we kept leaning toward a dessert. The caramel and burnt sugar notes in the pour had us thinking about bread pudding, and we decided to give it a twist with a dark chocolate version since Shenk’s finishes with that dark-chocolate note. The richness of the dessert matched the sweetness on the palate and the lighter profile of Shenk’s, while the plum and citrus helped bring a pop of brightness to the pairing.
Nav and Katie’s Thoughts
Michter’s is one of those distilleries that consistently puts out great whiskey, even though they’re always tweaking and innovating. For the 2019 release of Shenk’s, the whiskey was matured entirely in American oak, including some Chinquapin oak barrels — a type of oak that brings a softer sweetness and a little extra depth. You can definitely feel that influence in the overall profile. This pour leans softer and sweeter compared to some of the higher-proof bottles we’ve had so far. It’s an easy sipper with a lighter finish, and we both really enjoyed how approachable it was — a nice change of pace for Day 7.
