Tasting Notes

  • Nose – Malt-forward with notes of raisins, fig, and warm mulling spices.

  • Palate – Nutty and rich, with dark chocolate and brown butter.

  • Finish – Medium and drying, with leather, espresso, and oak.

Food Pairing – Butternut Squash Soup

  • When Katie and I were talking through pairings, we as always kept going back and forth between dessert and something savory. Star Hill has enough sweetness to go either way, but the drier finish pushed us toward butternut squash soup. The natural sweetness and creamy texture worked really well with the malt, fig, and brown-butter notes, and it helped smooth out the oak and espresso on the finish without covering anything up.

Nav and Katie’s Thoughts

  • Star Hill has been one of my favorite pours of the year, so I was excited for Katie to finally try it. What makes it stand out is how different it is from a typical Maker’s Mark — no corn in the mashbill and a heavy focus on malted wheat give it a completely different feel. The pour opens with malt and fruit, then settles into chocolate and nuttiness, finishing dry with a touch of oak and espresso. It easily lands as a top-five pour for me in 2025.
